The Sound of Taonga Pūoro

Over the last few days room 13 has been exploring a number of taonga pūoro, Māori instruments that utilise the voice of Tawhirimatea (god of the wind). We made porotītī (left) and purerehua (right). It was a real learning experience as we worked with different sizes, shapes and string types.

It's all about the money.

Today in Room 13 we had a visit from Vane from the ASB get wise programme. He was teaching us how to be financially literate. He talked to us about ways we could earn money and how we could save money.

Ways to earn:
Chores
Neighbourhood Jobs
Sell and Trade
Business

Words of wisdom:
"Saving is like training, the earlier you start the better you get"
"Eftpos Card: You can only take out the amount of money you put in"
"Credit Cards: Money belongs to the bank, which you have to pay back and you get charged interest"
"When spending my money this is what I do, spend some on you and save some too. Yeah!"

Science of Sound

One of the tasks for last weeks home learning was to create an instrument that had 2 or more differing pitches. The challenge in class this week was then to combine the different instrument sounds into a Orchestra. We had to have some quick learning about the types of instruments present in an orchestra and why they are grouped as they are into Wind, Strings and Percussion. We then grouped our selves and followed the basic instructions of our conductor to create the following rendition of Twinkle, Twinkle, Little Star.

Sound overload

Speeches
This week has seen the students all use their own personal sound instruments, their voices, to present their speeches to the class. We heard speeches on whistling, zoo's, conspiracy theories, football, moreporks and Bali to name just a few. The standard this year was very high and it has been very difficult to choose the class finalists who will compete in the syndicate semi-finals. However the students who will represent Room 13 this year are:

Year 6
Evie Richardson - Phobia's
Sam Woolley - Whistling

Year 5
Zoe Inskeep - Zoo's
Amy Schoenborn - Rabbits

Strike
We were also lucky enough to have Strike come and perform at school. As always they put on an amazingly immersive percussion performance that had the whole school feeling the beat. They used a variety of traditional (drums etc.) and non traditional instruments (fire, fizzy cans) to put together their cacophony of beats. Some students were even lucky enough to be included in the show.
