Homework Week 4

After lasts weeks questionings homework two questions really got me thinking:

"Can there be a cruel but generous hero?"
and
"Would Richie McCaw make a good Prime Minister?"
So my challenge to you this week is to see if there is an answer or answers to these questions.
You can post your opinion or constructively argue against someone else's opinion below.

Researching up a storm

In Room 13 over the last few days we have been gathering information and preparing vocabulary to help us in our Music report that we started after the amazing performance by Adam Page. With the help of a pod of iPads today we researched the history of music and quotes about music from famous people.

Some of our favourite pieces of information:

  • Electric guitars debuted in 1936
  • The word Music comes from the Greek word "Mousiki" which means the science of composing melodies
  • Elvis Presley died at the age of 42 in Graceland 1977
  • An electric guitar uses a pickup to change the vibration of the guitar into sound
  • The first studies of Western Musical history date back to the middle of the 18th Century
  • Apple computer introduced Apple iTunes Music store which allows people to download songs for 99cents in 2003
  • 1970 The Beatles break up and release solo albums
  • MTV goes on the air running around the clock Music Videos debuting "Video killed the radio star"

Some of our favourite quotes:
"I think I should have no other mortal wants, if I could always have music, It seems to infuse strength into my limbs, and ideas into my brain. Life seems to go on without effort when I am filled with music"
~ George Eliot (Poet and writer)

"The good thing about music is when it hits you, you feel no pain"
~ Bob Marley (Artist)

"Music is enough for lifetime but lifetime is not enough for music"
~ Sergei Rachmaninov (Composer)

"Music is a fluid art form that picks up echos of the past and weaves them into a new sound"
~ Ryan Lewis (Singer)

~ Peter Abelard

Feeling the groove

After yesterdays amazing performance Room 13 felt inspired to take on our own musical looping project. With a quick instructional session on how to use Garageband the students were away creating their pieces of music using the sounds their voices, body parts and other completely ordinary things made.

See if you can pick the different layers of music that have created these final pieces.

An amazing opportunity!

Adam Page, a Capital E performer, visited Muritai School today to perform his musical show for the Y3-6's.  He was AMAZING!!!  He used a variety of traditional and non-traditional musical instruments throughout his show.  The most important piece of equipment that he used in the show was a 'looping machine', which enabled him to create some really cool sounds.

Check out this song he made up using Grace's name...he's very talented!

Syndicate Assembly Week 2

Notices
There will be a lot of notices sent home over the next few weeks e.g. sports and camp notices. It will be important for the students to return any slips as soon as possible.

Homework
The Y5/6 syndicate homework has been sent out today.

Hats
It’s term 1 and each child needs a hat to wear everyday outside. It needs to be a wide brimmed hat, not a cap and ideally should be left at school in their desk for easy access. Thank you to those students who have remembered. Students not wearing hats have to stay in the shade area by the junior rooms.

PE Shed
The PE shed will be open every lunchtime (weather permitting). The PE shed door will be open and the PE shed monitors will work from inside the shed. The equipment needs to be returned by those who took it out, which has been an issue in the past. Students who don't return their gear will be given a chance BUT after they have used it up they will not be able to take PE gear out for a period of time (TBC).

Sport
Milo Cricket: Mr McMillan will have a meeting tomorrow for all those who are interested in playing cricket, boys and girls.
Touch Rugby: Mr Chadwick has asked that all touch rugby notices and money be returned to the office by Thursday this week.

Art club
Ms Berry will run Art Club every Friday lunchtime in Room 14. The Year 6’s are invited to attend for the first five weeks and then the Year 5’s in the second five weeks of the term.

"Search engines are some of the most useful tools on the planet, but what if you're not sure how to use them? There's a lot more to these amazing tools than what you might think."

Your homework task is to find a video clip or any other information that tells you how to use search engines, like google, effectively.
