Monday 20th October

Today Mr Chadwick is back! After a week of relievers teaching, Mr Chadwick is back from his trip. First, in the morning Mr Chadwick told us about his trip around Asia. Then we did the roll and then it was time for maths. After morning tea we did acrostic poems about Term 3. Then we went to the ICT lab and printed our acrostic poems off. After lunch we created Rube Goldberg machines. The idea of a Rube Goldberg machine is that you use a certain amount of items to create or make something happen. We had to make a piece of rubbish go into the rubbish bin. After that it was home time.

Tuesday 22 September

Today, in Room 21, after calling the roll we worked on our portfolios until 9:30, then we went for Maths. After morning tea, Ms Berry was taking us for Literacy to help us with our Shaun Tan statements. For a better understanding about our task, we were required to act a short scene based on a single picture from Shaun Tan's book The Arrival. Everyone had a fantastic act to preform after the 10 minutes we were given. Room 21 then re-worked and edited our statements, making them better every way possible. At 12:00 Mr Chadwick took us over to the library to issue some new books before luch at 12:30. Silent reading was after lunch before continuing with our Inquiry project: Innovation. Today we thought up some inquiry questions to investigate, such as "Why do people invent?" and "What would the world be like with no inventing?" And luckily, by the end of the lesson, it was time to go home!

Monday 22 September

For 3 action-packed nights the Muritai School stage was alive presenting our school production, The Lorax. Endless varities of costumes were sewn together and lines were repeated over and over for practice. The Year 7 & 8's played the Oncelers, the Thneed Machine dancers and some were our main characters. The Thneed machine dancers were great, and the drummers drummed away fantastically! Our Oncelers danced awesomely to the Industry dance, but the Grand Finale of Where's Your Head At blew the crowd away! Numerous comments from the parents and teachers said "That was amazing!" or "Incredible work guys!" We were absolutely exhausted by the end of the week, but we knew that the Year 7 & 8's dominated the stage!

Tuesday 10th June

Today room 21 started off the day with talking about the day because today was going to be a mucky day all the maths class were jumbled up because there were not enough teachers. But the main aspect of the day was that a few year eights chose some year sevens and went down to the Eastbourne dunes and planted about 50 odd plants and we all thought it would of taken 2 hours but we managed to complete it in half a hour which blow away the adult helpers who started this thing up it was a great experience for the enviro- schools we learnt how to plant plants for a good cause and learnt about the blue penguins that the planting was for and luckily we got to see two in the rocks a bit earlier then usual and they were beautiful. Then it was interval.

After interval we again talked about our machines that can do homework and spent a little time on our next paragraph the parts. Then after doing that we went to the school library and brought our work if not finished which was most people. Then it was time for lunch time.

We did silent reading for a long time. Then the class had a chose if they could read there book or listen to Mr Chadwick read the current book its called “Bootleg” its about chocolate being band from the world by the “Good for you party”. Then we had a game we started off playing a game that room23 taught us then room22 came out for a game we played “King dodge ball” after awhile of playing that room23 came out and because room21 was winning of course the whole of room23 got sent into room22’s side and in the end room23 and 22 won because they hit the bin! Then it was time to go home and before we did finish of the day with our class duties.

Tuesday 3rd June

Today in the morning we did the spelling test. After that we did our accuracy check, which is where we choose 50 words from our narrative book (which we did on Thursday) and check for any mistakes, grammatical errors or spelling errors. We then fill in the bar graph in the back of our literacy book. The aim of this is to see our progress and help us improve our accuracy. This has helped me because now I know what I’m getting wrong and how to fix it.

We then went to maths and room 23 had to stay in for a while because we were too noisy! The current subject is geometry/measurement

After morning tea we finished off our homework cheating drawings and now we’re nearly ready to write our explanation on it. We then went to the library and the librarian talked to us about constellations.

After Lunch (and we had 10 minutes extra) we looked at the three states of matter and what the changes have to do with energy. Then we did all our duties and went home!! Today was a day full of new and interesting facts and learning.

A while after that we had literacy and we had to write an exlpanantion on a picture we saw, discribing what it was and how it worked. Next after lunch we had silent reading then we went out for a game with Mr Skilton. After that we packed up the class and left school for a fun filled weekend.

Tuesday 6th May

Today room 21 started off the morning with accuracy. We were learning how to put commas in the right place and what to use them for. We got into groups and each had a sheet of paper, we had to edit the paper together and put the commas in the right place and take out the unwanted words. Then we had maths, in maths we are learning perimeters, areas and volume.

After morning tea we started to do literacy, in this term for literacy we are learning how to right an explanation. We looked at two samples of writing and looked at what the good points were and what the bad points were of an explanation, then we had to rate that peice if work from one to five.

Next we had inquiry after lunch. In this term we are learing about take action for energy. We are learning about how it's used, what it's used for, how its made and the qualitys about it. As a class we started to group ideas about where energy was used in the classroom and what it was used for. Then the class grouped ideas about what we had just said and thought what was powered by other things, other than electricity. After that we looked round the school for items that used power and how often they were used. We had to go round and take pictures of the things. After, we packed up the class, did our duties and went home.

Monday 7th April

Today many of room 21's students were out of the class, along with other Muritai year 7 and 8 students at the Zone Swimming Sports held at Naenae Pools. The standard of swimmers this year was very high and we are all waiting for confirmation of the final results of how we swam. It was a fantastic day as it was great to see so many students achieving, even if they had to be pushed a little. All students who participated should be proud of their efforts. ~ Mr Chadwick

Monday 9th March

Today we started of with some accuracy, we learnt about past, present and future tenses. As a class we had to decide whether the words displayed were past, present and future tense. We then had to copy out a paragraph about the rugby, which we had to change to past tense. I think it has helped a lot of us realize were we’re making our mistakes and how to fix them, it has helped me a lot because I often make the same mistake.

We then had maths. I am in Mr. Chadwick’s math’s class were we are learning about the perimeters, areas, radiuses and diameters of a circle. Today we had a particularly hard sheet, but in the end I think all of us understood it. I used to not understand measuring a circle but after today I learnt lots about it.

After morning tea we had literacy were we did another sheet on accuracy were we had to circle the present tenses and fill in the gaps by changing the words from present to past. We then had to think about the start of our latest explanation about a machine that does our homework for us. We then got into groups to do a many inquiry on energy. We went to the lab to research our topic. The point of this activity is to give us an awareness on our three week inquiry think this was a very good idea because almost everyone is having trouble with their inquiry.

After lunch we had to do silent reading. After that we had to discuss our inquiry and how to gain levels. It has helped lots of people get a better understanding of what they have to do and how to do it.

We then went out for a game of dodge ball with room 22 and 23we played year 8s vs. year 7s. this taught us many things including sportsmanship and ball skills.

Finally we did our duties and went home.

Tuesday 1st April

Today after the roll we did a writing sample about what we did before school from the moment we woke up to when we started writing. The catch was we only had five minutes. Then after maths and morning tea we got into groups of three and started writing a report about our Swimming Sports. After that we went to the Eastbourne library. After lunch We finished watching Bend it like Beckham. Fantastic day!

Today has been very full, we have had lots of fun though. We started off in the morning by writing our Harris Burdick narratives. We had lots of great descriptive ones and a few of the students in the class shared their stories. Afterwards we had maths. We had morning tea, then when we got back in the class we read silently for about 10 to 15 minutes. We then did literacy, Mr Chadwick gave us a story written by a boy called Robert. It was about Wood Pigeons. We highlighted the bits we liked and then wrote them down on a mini whiteboard. Then the whole class, including Mr Chadwick wrote a criteria for success for our reports. After that we went to the library to return books and get new ones out. There we met with our buddy class and played a game. After lunch we did inquiry and then played a game against Room 22.

Monday 17th March

This afternoon we went on two websites. One was about a Victorian robot invented in 1893, it was a site written by Paul Guinan. We went on another website which was a website that asked a question, Was there really a Holocaust?. It was written by Dr. E.R. Fields. We explored both websites and tried to find out four questions about the websites. The questions were,
What is the message of these sites?
Who is the author? Does the knowledge of who the author is change your perception about the website?
Is there any new learning? What are your first impressions of the sites?
We then watched a video about Year nines in London going on these websites and getting information and learning about these sites. Then a computer expert came and talked to them, and explained how the website is not safe, they were told to take a deeper look at these websites and they found out who wrote these sites. They found that a few of the sites that they had been looking at weren't true, and one of them was a racist site. The message of this was that not all sites are what they say, and before you go on a site take a deeper look at it, who it is written by, what it is about and if it's safe.

Tuesday 11th March

Today has been a very productive day. First thing in the morning we edited, finshed or started our amazing world record stories. This is fantastic bit of Kaio's story.

"Kaio Malama Going For Fame

Kaio Malama ten time Iron Man Champion of the world is participating in a extremely challenging event. Running through the Amazon for seven days. Then swimming through shark and piranha infested waters to Australia, and then biking around Australia twice".

While some of the children in the class stayed, about five of them left to go to the year three and four swimming sports, these were the House Captains and School Leaders.

After Morning Tea we changed classes for Maths, then we went to the library. Afterwards we played a game out side Room One. We played Bang and the winner was Kirsten. After lunch we did some silent reading, then we completed our flowers and vases of flowers. It was a very fun day today.

Friday 7th march

Yesterday we had our first art rotation. The things people did are as follows: dance, drama, song making, instrument making and clown school. These sessions happen around 1:30 to 2:45 and are great fun. We are going to have one activity for three weeks and then swap over to another arts group for the next three weeks and so on... We also started on our "record breaking attempts" where we have to write a report on something that we did that was amazing( made up of course). We will be working on these for the next week or so. We also had practice with patter tennis it was all great fun.

Friday 7th March

Yesterday the students of room 21's maths class participated in World Maths Day (www.worldmathsday.com) It was great to see so many enthusiastic students involved in challenging other students from around the world at basic facts. "It makes maths fun", "It's cool, fun, educational and addictive", "It's lots of fun challenging people from other countries" were some of the comments that I heard from students. Although the competition to reach 26 million right answers in 48 hours is over students can still access the site and compete against others till Sunday 16th March. ~ Mr Chadwick

Tuesday 4th March

Today in room 21 we started off the day with an asTLe writing test. Today we also found out that our girls cricket team lost 75 to 143, bad luck girls. We also found out our scores for our maths P.A.T test. After interval we went to our maths classes. For the first time this term we went down to the Eastbourne library to get two new books to last us for the rest of the month. Every two weeks we do a book review about the latest book we have read. We also went out for a game of Pirates but no one won because Mr Chadwick called out an instrution that none of us did properly so we all got out, which was a laugh. At lunchtime we also had a underwater hockey meeting, we had about a dozen people join for the great sport. Tomorrow is going to be another great day with technicraft and kapahaka.

Monday 3rd March

Today most of our girls went out to Bishops Park to play another game in the Milo cricket tournament. Last time they didn't come back with a win but they had fun, this time we are hoping for a win. Today we have also done some swimming. We found out our new maths groups and have done one lesson. After that we went to the ICT lab and we have worked on our class wiki. At two o'clock the people who had signed up for the great opportunity of helping out Muritai's Enviroschools are going to Mr Eames' class to get roles for enviroschools. Throughout the past week we have started on a piece of art work. We have drawn a variety of flowers and painted a background with a vase and painted our flowers then we cut them out and arranged them on to our background then put a glue type substance that makes our flowers look alive.

Thursday, February 28, 2008

Thursday 28th February

Then we also went out for a game of King Dodge ball with room 22, unfortunately nobody could tell who won becuase the teams were mixed, but we all knew that room 21 won. This week has been a real blast doing art all day. The results are also really amazing.

Wednesday 27th February

Today most of room 21's girls were out of the classroom with me and some others participating in our first Milo Shield cricket game of the year. We played Hutt Intermediate at Te Whiti park and had a blast! The final score was 121/3 of 20 overs to Hutt Intermediate, while the Muritai girls achieved 103/7. For many, today was only their second or third official game so it was great to see the confidence and enjoyment had by all. Congratulations girls you gave it your best and that was all that I could ask. ~ Mr Chadwick

Below is a slideshow of some of the events.

Monday 25th February

Today we began Arts Week. First we went to the hall with all of the syndicate and talked about Van Gough who we will be studying for art week. We also saw a really interesting doccumentary on him. HOW COOL! We then began our art, by drawing patterns and shading shapes, then we chose a 3D object and had to shade it, with depth and show where the darkness and the light is.

Friday 22nd February

Today we had Mr. Skilton teaching us. Narrative writing was first on the timetable with swimming afterwards. We also had buddy testing with our homework spelling words. Shortly after morning tea we had a reeeaaally long spelling test with 280 words!

Yet again Room 21 snatched victory in another game of rounders after the test challenging Room 22, but this time it was a very close game with the score 15 - 12.

Thursday 21st February

Yesterday we had to go over to the other side of the road because the trucks were bringing in the new Room 24. After that we went to Techni-craft. Straight after that we went out for a competition of rounders competing against the other classrooms.

Today Room 21 started off with narratives, then a Basic Facts test. We also did some statistical investigation questions, like " Whats your favourite breed of dog?" and "What's your favourite skateboard brand?". After interval, we completed a Star reading test. Room 21 whipped Room 24 today in Chinese Walls. I mean, we massacred them with a whole 8:00 minutes, beating their score of 3:30! Next time Room 24 will be ready. Room 21 is on a winning streak with it's victory of yesterdays rounders competition against the other classrooms.

Monday 18th February

Today to start the day off we went down to the pool and practiced our diving technique. When we got back we told the class about our book reviews. The class had to complete a Maths PAT test, one for the year 7's and one for the year 8's. Room 21 also learnt how to play a game called The Captains Ship. In the ICT lab today we updated our class wiki, and our personalized one's too! Some of us are currently learning how to use CoolText on our pages to add cool titles!

Today was a busy day with swimming, spelling, assembly, narratives, relating to others and heaps more! We did a big segment on relating to others in different ways like how we relate during I.T.C, between men, in Music etc. We did this to help us relate to others in the future.
Yesterday we went to an excelent show called 'Paua'. It was about a serial killer who goes round and KILLS the people poaching paua. And the weirdest thing was that the police had no leads. This turned out to be because someone in the police force was helping the killer and clearing the evidence before the police arrived. It was a great show with only 7 actors!! The sound effects were perfectly timed and the lighting was to die for.

A great thriller ~ Jack Crawford, Muritai School Critic

Awesome show with fantastic quick changes. I was constantly on the edge of my seat with fear. I would highly recommend this!!! ~ Lulu Carter, Muritai School Critic

Today was a bit of a hectic day of finishing tasks but we managed to squeeze in a visit to the library and a short but sweet visit with our buddies in Room 8!

We also did narrative writing about some illustrations and captions in a book we read part of. This book was created by a man named Harris Burdick who dropped off some pictures to a publisher and then was never seen again.
