Let's Celebrate!

Today we started exploring our inquiring into topic, Let's Celebrate! Our Big Idea is that “Participation in family, cultural and community celebrations brings people closer together”. We created a list of the celebrations that we participate in and another list of the other celebrations that we know about, then talked about the reasons we do these celebrations. Here's a wee taster of what we did.

The Sound of Taonga Pūoro

Over the last few days room 13 has been exploring a number of taonga pūoro, Māori instruments that utilise the voice of Tawhirimatea (god of the wind). We made porotītī (left) and purerehua (right). It was a real learning experience as we worked with different sizes, shapes and string types.

It's all about the money.

Today in Room 13 we had a visit from Vane from the ASB get wise programme. He was teaching us how to be financially literate. He talked to us about ways we could earn money and how we could save money.

Ways to earn:
Chores
Neighbourhood Jobs
Sell and Trade
Business

Words of wisdom:
"Saving is like training, the earlier you start the better you get"
"Eftpos Card: You can only take out the amount of money you put in"
"Credit Cards: Money belongs to the bank, which you have to pay back and you get charged interest"
"When spending my money this is what I do, spend some on you and save some too. Yeah!"
